Helping You Heal from What You Couldn’t Control

Wondering if it will ever get better? Struggling with reminders? Constantly thinking about something you feel like should be in the past? Still blaming yourself even though you know it’s not your fault? Wondering if therapy can really help you? Worried you can’t remember enough details to do trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy, also known as trauma-focused counseling or trauma-informed psychotherapy, includes a number of evidence-based specialized therapeutic approaches designed to help individuals who have experienced traumatic events or situations. It focuses on addressing the psychological and emotional effects of trauma, promoting healing, and improving overall well-being.

Trauma therapy supports individuals who want to heal their nervous system and process traumatic experiences in safe, digestible ways to promote a more integrated self. Our therapists use their specialized training to understand how trauma and stress effect the brain and body and help individuals heal from the inside out.

  • Combat, military, or first responder experiences

I wouldn’t call it “trauma”…but it was stressful

“Trauma” is defined as the state produced by severe mental. emotional, or physical stress or injury. It is important to understand that when we talk about “trauma”, we are ultimately taking about a patterned response in our nervous system that can be created by many different stressful situations and can be experienced differently by different people.

Often our people come to us saying that what they are going through is not “bad enough” to be trauma. One of the most common things we hear is that…”well other people have it worse”. And while we don’t find the idea of comparative suffering very supportive, it is important to us that you know we can use whatever language feels right to you.

“Hard stuff” “Rough childhood” “Dysfunctional family” Ultimately, physiologically trauma is characterized by an overwhelming stress response in our nervous system which can be triggered just as much by relational, emotional, or mental stress as physical danger. Because it impacts our nervous system in the same way, the same types of therapy work!

complex trauma & chronic stress

“It’s just how I grew up”

Sometimes we have experienced stressful things for a long time and don’t know what to call it. Sometimes it seems normal to us because “that’s just how I grew up”.

Complex Trauma, also known as Developmental Trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), is a term used to describe childhood traumatic stress that can occur when a person’s stress response is repeatedly triggered over an extended period of time. This can happen for a number of reasons including things like chronic exposure to stressful environments, dysfunctional family patterns, consistent poor treatment, abuse, or neglect, which can disrupt the brain’s development and lead to a variety of challenges. Complex trauma can also describe exposure to varied or multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature.
