Breaking Free from Unhealthy Relationship Patterns

Is your relationship feeling stuck or disconnected? It can happen to any loving relationship. Couples can get stuck in a relational pattern leaving each partner feeling, possibly distant, frustrated, unsure, or lonely in a relationship that was once so fulfilling. As a couple’s therapist, I want to come alongside your relationship and help move you from an unhealthy pattern of interaction to one where each partner feels heard, understood, and loved.

Using Emotion Focused Therapy, an evidence-based model, couples can restructure their bond and intimacy by learning to reach for one another and respond to each other in different, new ways. It is within these new, deeper connections that couples find their way back to their partner, being able to reach for one another, especially in times of stress.

It is my privilege to walk alongside your relationship and offer a safe place for couples to learn new patterns of interacting. I am collaborative and empathic as I walk with you into new ways of reaching one another.

What Is Emotion Focused Therapy?

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is a highly effective therapeutic approach that helps couples understand and transform their emotional dynamics, enhancing connection, intimacy, and relationship satisfaction. EFT focuses on identifying and expressing underlying emotions and reshaping negative interaction patterns. Here’s how it can help couples:

  • Uncovering Hidden Emotions: EFT helps couples move beyond surface-level arguments to explore the deeper, often unspoken emotions driving conflict, such as fear, sadness, or insecurity. For example, a partner might express anger in a conflict, but underlying that emotion could be fear of rejection or abandonment.
  • Addressing Emotional Needs: Couples often fight when emotional needs (like feeling loved, valued, or safe) are not being met. EFT helps each partner express these needs in a way that invites empathy and understanding from the other partner.
  • Breaking Negative Cycles: Couples often get stuck in repetitive negative cycles, where one partner’s actions trigger defensive or hurtful reactions in the other, leading to a downward spiral. EFT helps couples identify these patterns and interrupt them by fostering new, healthier ways of interacting.
  • Creating Secure Bonds: EFT focuses on building emotional safety and security within the relationship. As partners become more attuned to each other’s emotions and vulnerabilities, they can respond with care, reducing defensive reactions and building trust.
  • Deepening Empathy: One of EFT’s key goals is to help partners understand each other’s emotional worlds more deeply. As partners express their vulnerabilities and emotions, they learn to empathize with each other’s experiences, which strengthens emotional intimacy.
  • Fostering Compassion: When couples learn to respond to each other with compassion, they become more supportive and less likely to react in anger or frustration. EFT teaches couples to see beyond the behavior and recognize the emotions driving it, which can reduce conflict and increase closeness.
  • Rebuilding Trust: Trust is essential in relationships, and EFT focuses on rebuilding trust by creating a secure emotional bond between partners. As couples learn to express emotions and needs in a safe environment, trust grows, reducing fear of abandonment or betrayal.
  • Creating Safe Emotional Spaces: EFT helps couples create a safe space where both partners feel comfortable expressing their vulnerabilities without fear of judgment or rejection. This emotional safety is key to developing a strong, healthy relationship.
  • Understanding Attachment Styles: EFT is rooted in attachment theory, which explores how early attachment experiences with caregivers influence adult relationships. Partners with insecure attachment styles may struggle with intimacy, leading to fear or withdrawal. EFT helps couples recognize these attachment patterns and address them in the context of their relationship.
  • Healing Past Wounds: EFT provides an opportunity for couples to heal from past attachment wounds, whether from childhood or previous relationships. By addressing unresolved fears of abandonment or emotional pain, couples can create a more secure bond.
  • Expressing Vulnerabilities: EFT encourages partners to communicate their deeper feelings (such as hurt, fear, or longing) rather than expressing emotions in reactive or defensive ways. This can reduce misunderstandings and prevent conflicts from escalating.
  • Active Listening: Couples learn how to listen actively, validating each other’s feelings and experiences. This improves mutual understanding and creates an atmosphere of emotional support.
  • Emotional Intimacy: As couples work through EFT, they develop stronger emotional bonds. This emotional connection often leads to improved physical and sexual intimacy, as both partners feel more emotionally secure and connected.
  • Rekindling Romance: By addressing the emotional undercurrents in the relationship, couples can reignite feelings of love, affection, and passion that may have diminished over time.
  • Addressing Unresolved Conflicts: EFT allows couples to address long-standing issues that may have been festering under the surface for years. By focusing on emotions and attachment needs, couples can work through unresolved conflicts in a way that promotes healing.
  • Finding New Solutions: As couples move away from reactive behaviors and connect emotionally, they often find new, more effective ways to resolve conflicts. EFT provides a space to explore solutions that work for both partners.
  • Learning Emotional Regulation: EFT teaches couples how to regulate their emotions better. As partners become more in tune with their own feelings and each other’s emotions, they are better able to prevent conflicts from escalating in the future.
  • Strengthening Problem-Solving Skills: With improved communication and emotional connection, couples can address future challenges more constructively, reducing the likelihood of future conflicts or misunderstandings.
  • Rebuilding Connection: EFT can be especially helpful for couples healing from betrayal, such as infidelity. It allows partners to explore the underlying emotional issues that contributed to the betrayal and work toward rebuilding trust and emotional security.
  • Restoring Emotional Bonds: Infidelity often causes deep emotional wounds, but EFT helps couples process these emotions and begin to restore their bond by fostering understanding, empathy, and forgiveness.
