EMDR Intensives for Birth Trauma, Pregnancy Loss, and Perinatal Mental Health in Houston, Texas

Sometimes healing requires more than an hour a week.

When trauma is tied to pregnancy, birth, loss, or the postpartum period, weekly therapy can feel fragmented. Just as you begin to settle into the work, the session ends and the momentum is interrupted.

Whether you’re carrying the impact of a traumatic birth, pregnancy loss, NICU experience, fertility-related trauma, unexpected medical interventions or a distressing postpartum experience, you may be looking for a more focused path forward.

EMDR intensives offer dedicated time and space to process a specific traumatic experience without the interruptions of traditional weekly therapy.

This is not about rushing your healing. It is about creating the conditions for deeper, more sustained work.

Designed with Mothers in Mind

As a therapist and mother, we know firsthand how difficult it can be to prioritize your own healing while juggling childcare, feeding schedules, work demands, and the countless responsibilities that come with caring for a family.

EMDR intensives were designed to offer a more concentrated option for those who want meaningful trauma work but struggle to make weekly therapy fit into an already full life. By setting aside dedicated time for healing, many parents find they can engage more deeply in the process without months of scheduling challenges.

What Is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive is a focused therapy experience designed to help you process a specific trauma memory or experience over an extended period of time. Unlike traditional weekly sessions, an intensive allows us to stay with the work long enough to build momentum, move through barriers, and support meaningful integration.

Our EMDR intensives are designed specifically for perinatal and reproductive trauma and are grounded in EMDR as the primary treatment model. Somatic-based regulation and grounding strategies are integrated throughout the process as needed to support safety, pacing, and nervous system regulation during trauma processing.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process distressing or traumatic experiences that feel “stuck” in the nervous system. Using bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating tones—EMDR helps the brain reprocess how traumatic memories are stored, reducing their emotional intensity and supporting more adaptive beliefs and responses.

EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach that includes preparation, identifying target memories, reprocessing, and integration. In intensive work, this structure allows us to focus deeply on a specific experience while maintaining safety, pacing, and support throughout the process.

This approach can be especially helpful for perinatal and reproductive trauma, where a single experience (such as a birth, loss, or NICU stay) continues to carry strong emotional and physiological responses.

What We Can Work On during Perinatal EMDR Intensives?

EMDR intensives may be appropriate for experiences such as:

  • Traumatic birth experiences
  • Fertility and reproductive trauma
  • Emergency cesarean birth
  • Birth-related medical trauma
  • NICU admissions and prolonged hospitalizations
  • Pregnancy loss or miscarriage
  • Stillbirth
  • TFMR
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Postpartum medical events
  • Distressing experiences during pregnancy or postpartum

Why Focus on One Experience?

  • During an intensive, we intentionally focus on one primary experience rather than attempting to process everything at once.

In perinatal trauma work, one experience often holds far more than what appears on the surface. For example, when someone comes in wanting to process a difficult delivery, there are often multiple “touchpoints” within that one event that need attention—such as the emergency intervention, a specific interaction with a provider, and immediate postpartum separation.
  • For some, we also find links to earlier experiences of powerlessness, or current parenting triggers that are physiologically tied to the birth trauma and can keep the nervous system stuck in survival mode. Each of these layers carries its own emotional weight and meaning. EMDR intensives create the space to move through them one at a time, so the nervous system isn’t rushed and the work can land more fully and hold over time.

Healing often extends beyond the specific event we target, but we begin with one meaningful place.

What to Expect with EMDR Intensives?

Consultation and Screening

We’ll start with a brief phone consultation to get a sense of what you’re hoping to work on and whether an EMDR intensive is the right fit for you.

This step matters. EMDR intensives aren’t the best fit for every situation or every stage of healing, so this conversation helps us slow things down just enough to make sure the format is supportive, safe, and aligned with your needs and nervous system capacity.

If it feels like a good match, you’ll receive a short set of preparation materials by email. These are designed to help you get clear on your goals, identify the experience you most want to focus on, and feel grounded and prepared heading into the intensive.

The Intensive

The heart of the work happens in a 5-hour EMDR intensive, typically scheduled on a Monday or Friday, with limited weekend availability.

The pace is intentional. We build in breaks throughout the session so your system has time to regulate, rest, and integrate as we go—this isn’t a rushed or “push through it” kind of experience.

We focus on one primary perinatal or reproductive trauma experience, moving through the EMDR process at a depth that allows your system to actually stay with it, not just skim the surface. This includes preparation, reprocessing, and integration work within the session itself.

Integration

After the intensive, you have the option to schedule an integration session.

This is not included in the intensive fee and is not required, but many clients find it helpful as a space to reflect, make meaning of what came up, and notice how things are shifting in the days or weeks after the work.

If you’re already connected with an ongoing therapist, you’re also welcome to continue processing with them. With your permission, we are happy to coordinate with your provider to support continuity of care and make sure the work feels supported on all sides.

Investment

5-Hour Perinatal EMDR Intensive: $1,500

This fee includes the consultation and screening process, a personalized 5-hour EMDR intensive, and post-intensive recommendations to support continued healing and integration.

Unlike traditional weekly therapy, intensives create dedicated space to focus deeply on a specific experience without the interruptions of stopping and restarting each week. Many clients find that the concentrated format allows them to make meaningful progress in a single day that might otherwise take months to address in weekly sessions.

Optional integration sessions are available at the standard session rate of $210 and can be scheduled as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Perinatal EMDR Intensives

Absolutely. EMDR can often be used safely and effectively during pregnancy, and some individuals choose to process a previous traumatic birth, pregnancy loss, or medical trauma before welcoming a new baby.

Whether an intensive is appropriate depends on your stage of pregnancy, emotional stability, support system, and treatment goals. These factors are discussed during the consultation process.

It’s also common to have concerns about doing trauma work during pregnancy due to fears about stress affecting the baby; however, for many people experiencing perinatal trauma, that stress response is already active in the background. In those cases, carefully supported processing can actually help reduce overall physiological stress and create more relief and regulation for both parent and baby.

Possibly. Many people seeking support for birth trauma, pregnancy loss, fertility challenges, or other perinatal experiences also have earlier life experiences that influence how those events were experienced and processed.

The focus of these intensives is a specific perinatal or reproductive trauma. While childhood experiences may naturally emerge as part of the work, the intensive is not designed to comprehensively address complex childhood trauma or multiple longstanding trauma experiences.

During the consultation process, we’ll discuss your history and determine whether an intensive focused on your perinatal experience is likely to be a good fit.

Yes, in some cases. Many individuals seek EMDR intensives during pregnancy to process a previous traumatic birth, pregnancy loss, or other distressing experience before giving birth again. The goal is not to stress your nervous system before birth, but to help you approach the experience with greater confidence, safety, and emotional freedom.

As a therapist fully trained and certified in both EMDR and Somatic Experiencing (SEP), I draw from both approaches in my work. For intensives, EMDR serves as the primary treatment model because it offers a structured framework for identifying and processing specific traumatic memories within a focused period of time. This structure makes it particularly well-suited to the intensive format.

Somatic Experiencing offers valuable tools for nervous system regulation, body awareness, and integration. Elements of somatic work are often incorporated throughout the intensive, but the overall structure and treatment approach are anchored in EMDR.

This is a common concern and part of the reason preparation is such an important component of the process.

We work collaboratively and intentionally, incorporating pacing, regulation skills, and breaks throughout the day. You will not be pushed beyond your capacity, and the intensive is designed to support both processing and stabilization.
