Helping Teens Thrive: Discover The Power Of Adolescent Therapy

Does your teen not seem like their normal self? Does your adolescent seem to be struggling? Does your teenager seem anxious or sad, are they withdrawn or not talking to you? Are you at a loss for how to help to them?

Teen Therapy, also known as Adolescent Psychotherapy or Counseling for Teenagers, can look very different to child therapy but should involve the same specialized training regarding child development and family systems to be the most effective. Teenagers are not just little adults or larger children, they are in a world all their own when it comes to fast-paced brain development, complex social navigations, and long lasting impact of many big choices that come with adolescence. We make sure our therapists have the specialized training to support the unique needs of teenagers, not just treat them like small adults.

This is a critical time for young people to need trustworthy support, even when they don’t know how to ask for it. We understand the challenges that come with finding a therapist skilled enough to support the needs of the individual our teenagers want to become, the needs of the parents that want the best for their kids, and the needs of the family as a whole, even when those needs all seem to be different. We love to build lasting relationships with our teenagers and their families so that as they grow, they know they have a place they can come back to (that moms and dads trust) in future seasons of their lives.

What Teen Therapy Involves

Therapists create a safe, confidential space where children can freely express their feelings without fear of judgment.

Therapy offers children another safe, trustworthy adult to support them and offer empathy and guidance (for children and parents!) during challenging times.

Our therapists have special training so that they are able to offer experiences of boundaries and structure, as well as problem-solving for children and teens that is a bit easier to receive when not coming from moms or dads.

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
  • Dialectic-Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Focuses on identifying effective coping skills and managing negative self-talk and challenging behaviors.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR): Involves guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to process stressful or traumatic experiences and reduce their impact.
  • Talk Therapy: These approaches help teenagers explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to understand and change negative patterns.
  • Creative Expressive Therapies: Art therapy, sandtray therapy, writing therapy, play therapy, and other creative modalities are effective for teenagers who may find it challenging to express themselves verbally. These therapies can facilitate emotional expression and exploration.
  • Skill-Building: Therapists teach practical skills such as problem-solving, communication, stress management, and emotion regulation.
  • Family Therapy: Involves the entire family to improve communication and address relational issues that may impact the child’s well-being.

Benefits of Adolescent Therapy

Teen therapy plays a crucial role in supporting adolescents through a challenging phase of life. By providing a safe and supportive environment, therapists help teenagers navigate their emotions, develop essential life skills, and address underlying issues effectively. Anyone facing emotional, social, or behavioral challenges during adolescence can potentially benefit from the structured support and guidance that teen therapy provides.

  • Emotional Regulation: Helps teenagers identify and manage their emotions effectively, fostering emotional resilience.
  • Enhanced Self-Esteem: Supports teenagers in developing a positive self-image and confidence in their abilities.
  • Improved Relationships: Enhances communication skills and promotes healthier interactions with peers, family members, and authority figures.
  • Behavioral Improvement: Addresses behavioral issues such as aggression, defiance, or withdrawal, by teaching alternative coping strategies.
  • Academic Success: Can improve concentration, problem-solving skills, and overall academic performance.
  • Support for Parents: Provides guidance and strategies for parents to better understand and support their child’s emotional needs

Parents also benefit by learning effective strategies to support their teen’s emotional well-being and growth.

  1. Teens and Adolescents: Those experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, ADHD, or other emotional and behavioral difficulties.
  2. Parents: Parents seeking guidance on managing teen behavior, fostering communication, and creating a supportive home environment.
